Vlisco the Hollandais brand has many admirers one of the more creative ones is Lisa Folawiyo a Nigerian fashion designer. In less than four years Lisa has perfected the art of wearing Ankara, being the first to embellish the fabric with sequins, swarovski crystals, beads and the like, she turned Jewel by Lisa into a coveted luxury label. She is also not afraid to mix ankara with a wide range of fabrics such as taffeta, linen, cotton, chiffon, chantilly lace, and silk. David Tlale, winner of the Arise Africa Fashion Week Designer award, will be showcasing his designs at the New York Fashion Week in September 2009. Tlale’s designs have been lauded in South Africa and he is considered one of the premier fashion designers in South Africa and internationally.

The New York Fashion week will give Tlale a great boost and help expose his fashion sense to a much wider, more particular audience. In his show which will be titled “Cultural Intimacy”, Tlale will be highlighting ‘Africouture’ at its best – Swazi and Ndebele geometric patterns, ostrich eggshell jewellery, traditional beading, and Kudu horn all swathed in natural and skin-toned colors.
Tlale will be shocasing his designs in a category entitled Arise: African Promise Collective, which will feature Nigerian designers Tiffany Amber and Lisa Folawiyo, and Madagascar’s Eric Raisina. His clothing line will be featured on the night of September 11th.
This is a flavour of what to expect from the new york fashion week these are some of the sketches and images from what is a truley global affair, there are designs and designers from different parts of the world as represented here. On the right is a sketch from Rosa Chá, the Brazilian swimwear label now designed by Alexandre Herchcovitch and to the left is Lutz & Patmos who have recruited none other than the Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu as their latest partner. The knitwear duo submitted proposals, and this organic cotton, deep scoop-neck, yoke-backed sweater came out on top. Proceeds from sales of the pullover will benefit the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre, scheduled to open in 2011, as well as the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, whose beneficiaries hand-beaded the ornaments that adorn it. Jason Wu (bottom left) will be unveiling his line of jewelry for Atelier Swarovski. His pieces are inspired by the work of artist Tara Donovan. “I like her concept of sculpting with everyday objects”.
